The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has predicted that by 2026, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will control at least 30 states across Nigeria, as more opposition governors and political leaders continue to join the ruling party.
Idris made the statement while addressing journalists in Abuja, noting that the ongoing wave of defections shows the growing confidence Nigerians have in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its policy direction.
“By 2026, we expect to have no fewer than 30 APC-controlled states. Many leaders from opposition parties have already indicated interest in joining the APC because they believe in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Minister said.
The development comes amid what political observers describe as a gale of defections, as governors and lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition platforms continue to switch allegiance to the APC.
According to a report by Vanguard, the PDP Governors’ Forum has been significantly weakened following the resignation of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and the reported defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC.
Similarly, TVC News reported that over 64,000 members of the PDP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) recently defected to the ruling party, further consolidating the APC’s strength ahead of the 2026 elections.
Minister Idris emphasized that the APC remains committed to delivering good governance and uniting Nigerians across all political divides. He added that the party’s recent gains at both federal and state levels show that Nigerians “trust the APC to move the nation forward.”
With the continued momentum of defections and the weakening of opposition ranks, analysts believe the ruling party could expand its political dominance to 30 states before the 2026 electoral cycle.
