Fuel Crisis Looms as PENGASSAN Shuts Down Nationwide

Borno State Government

Nigeria is bracing for fresh fuel scarcity after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) declared an indefinite nationwide strike on Saturday.

The union, which represents senior workers in the oil and gas sector, ordered its members to withdraw services from all facilities with immediate effect, citing unresolved disputes with government and oil companies over welfare, working conditions, and other pressing issues.

PENGASSAN stressed that it had exhausted all dialogue channels before resorting to industrial action. The strike, it warned, will impact crude oil production, product distribution, and nationwide supply of petroleum products.

Already, panic buying has begun. Long queues formed at filling stations in major cities by Saturday evening, with independent marketers hinting at possible price hikes if the impasse drags on.

Industry experts caution that the strike could worsen the fragile fuel supply chain, triggering hoarding, scarcity, and a spike in pump prices.

As at press time, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to the union’s action.
