The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State concluded its participation in the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) with a commemorative service held at ECWA Church, Babban Ruga, Katsina, on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Christian members of the Command gathered for the closing event of the week-long activities aimed at promoting safer roads and sustainable transport in line with the theme: “Streets for Life – Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe.”
Delivering a goodwill message during the service, Assistant Route Commander Bilya Musa, who represented the State Sector, reaffirmed the Corps’ dedication to environmental sustainability and road safety. He highlighted that FRSC’s initiatives align with Goal 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—climate action—through the promotion of non-motorized transport like walking and cycling.
He emphasized the shared duty of all road users, authorities, and stakeholders in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, who are among the most vulnerable on the roads. “Every life matters,” he noted, urging that walkers and cyclists be given equal protection as motorists.
The service also served as a platform to educate attendees on the health advantages of walking and cycling, which include improved well-being and longer life expectancy. The message stressed that road safety must be a collective responsibility involving governments, NGOs, religious groups, the private sector, and individuals.
The Corps’ broader road safety strategy includes the Nigeria National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS), a policy designed to meet the targets of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030). The NRSS promotes the adoption of policies supportive of non-motorized transportation, as well as increased patrol and enforcement in high-risk areas to protect vulnerable road users.
Assistant Route Commander Musa also encouraged the public to take advantage of the FRSC mobile application, which offers various user-friendly features aimed at improving road safety compliance and emergency response.
The week’s activities began on Monday, May 12, 2025, with a press briefing, followed by public sensitization campaigns, school outreach programmes on youth road safety, flyer distribution, Friday prayers in mosques, and culminated with the Sunday service at ECWA Church.
Highlighting the importance of engaging religious institutions in awareness campaigns, the FRSC noted that worship centres serve as strategic platforms due to their wide reach and influence. “Religious leaders play a key role in influencing behaviour, especially among the youth, who are disproportionately affected by road crashes,” the message stated.
Sector Commander Corps Commander Maxwell K. Lede urged churches and mosques across the state to continue championing road safety messages and encouraging a culture of responsible road use among their congregants.
In his remarks, the Resident Pastor of ECWA Babban Ruga, Rev. Samaila Jacob, commended FRSC for bringing the campaign to their church and pledged their continued support in spreading the message of safety.
The 2025 Global Road Safety Week in Katsina has been hailed as a resounding success, effectively merging faith-based advocacy with public enlightenment in the push toward safer streets for all.
