FRSC Commander Intercepts Overloaded Keke with 20 Passengers in Katsina — Ensures Safe Rescue, Condemns Inhumane Transport Practice

In a rare and dramatic intervention, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State, Corps Commander Maxwell Kaltungo Lede, personally intercepted a dangerously overloaded tricycle (Keke NAPEP) carrying a shocking 20 passengers—including breastfeeding mothers and children—while commuting to his office on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred when a tricycle bearing registration number MAN 400 WU and body code 4098 was found crammed with passengers along a major Katsina route. The rider claimed he was assisting stranded commuters whose vehicle had broken down.

Displeased by the alarming risk and gross violation of safety norms, Commander Lede took swift action. He arranged alternative transportation for all passengers, ensuring their safety and upholding their dignity.

“This is about human life and dignity. Overloading—no matter the excuse—is inexcusable,” said Lede, who emphasized that the FRSC’s mission goes beyond sanctions, highlighting the Corps’ balanced approach between enforcement and empathy.

Lede commended the role of tricycles in urban mobility, particularly in areas where larger vehicles struggle to reach.

“They’re vital for last-mile connectivity and are key to youth employment,” he noted. However, he cautioned operators never to compromise safety for profit or sympathy.

The commander further called for unity among transport unions and urged the public to support Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s infrastructure strides by promoting responsible road use.

“Road safety is everyone’s business,” he said. “Let’s complement the government’s efforts by ensuring safe, dignified, and orderly transportation for all.”
