Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has drawn attention to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s extraordinary political journey, recalling his defiant stand during Nigeria’s turbulent 1993 transition.
Speaking at an event, Osinbajo reflected on how, after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, elections by General Ibrahim Babangida, followed by General Sani Abacha’s takeover and the dissolution of the Senate, Tinubu resisted by attempting to reconstitute the Senate. His bold move led to detention, court charges, and eventual exile.
“Today, he is also here to celebrate with his former tormentors as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Osinbajo remarked, highlighting Tinubu’s resilience and political rise from exile to Nigeria’s highest office.
The statement underscores the irony of history, where a once-persecuted opposition figure now leads the nation, standing alongside those who once sought to silence him.
