The Freedom Fighters, a Kano-based political pressure group, have accused Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of betraying the trust of Dr Boniface Aniebonam Okechukwu, the founder of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
In a strongly worded statement, the group recalled that Dr Aniebonam, who established the NNPP in 2002 with the vision of producing a God-fearing president for Nigeria, had entrusted the party to Kwankwaso and supported him financially to pursue his presidential ambition in 2023. The move also saw Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and several others emerge victorious under the party’s platform.
However, according to the Freedom Fighters, Kwankwaso “turned around to betray the very man who gave him everything at no cost,” accusing him of unilaterally taking control of the party, sidelining the founder, and fraudulently changing the party’s logo.
The group further described Kwankwaso as “a serial betrayer,” citing his past political fallouts with former President Goodluck Jonathan, President Bola Tinibu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Senator Ibrahim Shekarau.
Calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect the rulings of courts in Abia and the FCT that affirmed Dr Aniebonam’s leadership of the NNPP, the group warned that Nigeria “is not a banana republic where the rule of law does not thrive.”
Signed by Comrade Muhammad B. Bashir, Chairman, and Comrade Ahmad Salisu, Secretary, the statement emphasized that the Freedom Fighters would not support “injustice and betrayal of trust” in the nation’s democracy.
