France has criticized Mali’s pivot from Western allies to Russian security support, declaring the partnership has failed to deliver the stability promised by Bamako.
Since removing French and U.S. forces in 2021, Malian leader Assimi Goïta turned to Moscow to help combat Islamist insurgencies. However, escalating violence and continued insecurity have prompted France to end counterterrorism cooperation and expel Malian diplomats.
Paris insists that Mali’s experiment with Russian support has fallen short of expectations, leaving the country more vulnerable amid West Africa’s persistent security challenges.
The move underscores growing tensions between Mali and its former Western partners, as the Sahel nation navigates a controversial shift in military alliances.
