Four Nigerian soldiers have been confirmed dead after insurgents launched a coordinated attack on the Military Super Camp at Ngamdu, along the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway in Borno State.
According to a report by Reuters, the Nigerian Army said the attack occurred late Thursday when dozens of insurgents, believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), stormed the camp with heavy weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), armed drones, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, said troops repelled the assault after a fierce exchange of gunfire, forcing the terrorists to retreat. He confirmed that four soldiers lost their lives while five others sustained injuries.
“The troops displayed gallantry and resilience in defending their position despite the use of advanced weaponry by the terrorists,” Uba stated, adding that several insurgents were neutralized while others fled with gunshot wounds.
The Army said reinforcement teams were immediately deployed to secure the area, while engineers cleared multiple IEDs planted along the highway, which temporarily disrupted movement between Maiduguri and Damaturu.
ABC news noted that this was one of the most serious attacks in the region in recent months, highlighting the persistence of insurgent activity despite ongoing military operations. The Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, a critical route linking Borno and Yobe states, had enjoyed relative calm for more than three years before this renewed assault.
Borno State remains a flashpoint in Nigeria’s 15-year conflict with Boko Haram and ISWAP, groups that have killed thousands and displaced millions across the North-East.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and security in the region, saying troops are currently conducting pursuit operations to eliminate the fleeing insurgents and dismantle their hideouts.
