In a dramatic twist of fate, a former Nigerian international footballer turned businessman has been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, over an alleged attempt to smuggle cocaine out of the country.
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigation, was reportedly intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during routine checks at the departure wing of the airport.
Sources close to the agency revealed that the former football star, now a well-known entrepreneur in Lagos and Abuja, was found in possession of substance suspected to be cocaine carefully concealed within luggage and personal effects.
Preliminary tests have confirmed the substance as cocaine, weighing several kilograms. The arrest has shocked fans and associates of the ex-footballer, many of whom described him as a “role model” and a “philanthropist with a clean image.”
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest, stating:
“We can confirm that a Nigerian ex-footballer, now a businessman, was apprehended while attempting to smuggle illicit drugs. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be arraigned once profiling is complete.”
The arrest has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many expressing disappointment over yet another public figure being linked to drug trafficking.
This development adds to the growing list of high-profile arrests made by the NDLEA under its ongoing offensive against narcotics smuggling and transnational drug cartels operating within Nigeria’s borders.
Meanwhile, the agency has assured the public that no one, regardless of status, will be spared in its bid to rid Nigeria of the drug menace.
