Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has thrown her weight behind the 10th Senate, dismissing concerns over its handling of the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day (IWD), Mrs. Tinubu described the Senate as a “mature” institution that should not be dragged into controversy. She maintained that lawmakers were “doing what is needful” in addressing the issue.
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, people may wonder why I’m not taking an opposing stance. But I believe the Senate is handling matters as it should. It is an esteemed and mature institution that deserves respect,” she told journalists.
Reflecting on her 12-year tenure as a senator, the First Lady urged women to be assertive in leadership and personal interactions. “Women must uplift themselves and ensure they are not spoken to inappropriately. You can always shut down such behavior before it even begins,” she advised.
Her comments come amid growing public scrutiny over the Senate’s response to the allegations, sparking fresh debates on accountability and gender dynamics in Nigeria’s political sphere.
