The Federal Government has sounded the alarm over imminent heavy rainfall and flooding expected to hit 15 states and no fewer than 69 communities between September 24 and 28, 2025.
The warning, issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre, was signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.
According to the advisory, areas most at risk include communities in Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara States.
Cities and towns specifically listed include Yola, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, Kano, Jibia, Akure, Oyo, Ahoada, Shagari, Serti, and Gusau.
“The heavy rainfall forecast for these locations may lead to flooding in the identified communities and their environs. Stakeholders are therefore advised to prepare adequately and implement preventive actions,” Bokani cautioned.
The ministry stressed that the alert forms part of its routine early-warning system aimed at reducing the risk of casualties and damage to property during the peak of the rainy season.
Residents, local government councils, and emergency responders have been urged to stay alert, take precautionary measures, and prepare for possible evacuation where necessary.
