Minister Dangiwa Leads Crackdown on Haphazard Lagoon Developments
The Federal Government has issued a stern one-month ultimatum to developers along the Lagos shoreline to regularize their properties or face revocation and demolition.
This warning came from the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, during his inspection of Lagos Lagoon Estates, Shoreline Front, Ikorodu Low-Cost Housing Estates, and Igbogbo sites on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, and Ministry Directors, the Minister expressed concern over irregular developments on the Lagos shoreline. He revealed that many areas had been sand-filled and built upon without securing federal titles or approvals.
“No Room for Irregular Developments”
Dangiwa, who also toured the Lagoon shoreline via boat with Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority officials, described the scene as “alarming.” He emphasized the Federal Government’s determination to halt haphazard construction and work in synergy with the Lagos State Government to restore order.
“Developments on the Lagos shoreline must comply with federal and state regulations. The era of chaotic, unauthorized constructions is over,” he declared.
Collaboration with Lagos State
Following a meeting with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dangiwa assured Nigerians of a unified approach to disciplined development along the shoreline. “The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, is taking stock of all assets and lands nationwide to ensure proper documentation and lawful use,” he added.
Legal Backing
The Land (Title Vesting) Act 1975 and regulations by the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority mandate federal oversight of shorelines, including dredging permits, while Lagos State oversees physical development.
The Minister concluded the day’s activities by inspecting the Ogbogbo Housing Project and Ikorodu Low-Cost Housing sites. His visit will end with a stakeholder engagement on Friday, December 13, 2024, aimed at fostering sustainable urban development.
