The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities across the country to strictly enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) currently participating in the ongoing nationwide strike.
The directive, contained in a circular issued on October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, was distributed to key officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Pro-Chancellors of federal universities, the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Budget Office, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
According to the circular, the Ministry expressed disappointment over ASUU’s continued industrial action despite several calls for dialogue, stressing that the government would no longer tolerate breaches of labor regulations.
The document further stated: “In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action.”
With this directive, the government has drawn a firm line, signaling a renewed stance against prolonged disruptions in the nation’s university system.
