In a significant development, the Organized Labour has received a commitment from the Federal Government, ensuring a consistent payment of wage awards in the future.
The assurance was conveyed by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during a crucial meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
This pledge comes in response to a joint 14-day ultimatum issued by both the NLC and TUC, urging the government to fulfill the 16-point agreement reached on October 2nd, 2023.
The ultimatum expressed the unions’ concerns and expectations regarding the implementation of key agreements, emphasizing the urgency of government action.
Minister Onyejeocha, in a conciliatory tone, kindly requested the labor organizations to reconsider their ultimatum, assuring them of the government’s dedication to diligently executing the agreed-upon terms.
The commitment to a consistent payment of wage awards signifies a positive step towards addressing the concerns raised be Organized Labour.
During the meeting, Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director and Chief Executive of the Presidential CNG initiative, provided additional support to the government’s assurances.
He virtually addressed the participants, confirming that the government has already fulfilled 70% of the total cost for acquiring new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and CNG kits.
As both parties engage in constructive dialogue, the outcome of these discussions holds the potential to foster a more collaborative relationship between the government and Organized Labour, addressing critical issues related to wage awards and fulfilling prior agreements.
