Fake Eye Doctor Nabbed in Akwa Ibom for Administering Unapproved Concoction to Hundreds

Katsina state government

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a self-proclaimed ophthalmologist for allegedly administering a dangerous mixture of unapproved substances to unsuspecting residents across three villages in Itu Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John said the suspect, identified as Gabriel Gideon from Nsit Ubium, was apprehended on Thursday, August 14, 2025, after a tip-off from a concerned citizen.

Gideon, who later confessed to having no medical qualifications, reportedly assembled over 300 people in each of the affected villages — Ikot Akpan Itam, Ikot Abasi Itam, and Nung Ikot Itam — charging them ₦500 apiece to treat eye conditions. He allegedly used a concoction made from olive oil, juice, and water, claiming it could cure various eye defects.

A medical team from the state’s Ministry of Health confirmed the substances were unapproved and unsafe.
