Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected fake medical doctor,Sunday Okon Akpan, over an alleged illegal abortion that claimed the life of 35-year-old Blessing Sunday Etim in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 19, when Akpan, who owns the so-called Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village, attempted to secretly dump the victim’s body after the botched procedure. He reportedly dropped the corpse and fled after being confronted by a co-tenant.
Detectives who arrived at the scene observed a premature fetus emerging from the victim’s body, confirming suspicions of an unlawful abortion. Investigations revealed that Akpan is not a licensed medical doctor or nurse, but merely a community health practitioner who had allegedly been running the health facility for illicit medical services.
The clinic has since been deserted, while the victim’s body was deposited in a morgue for autopsy. Police say investigations are ongoing.
DSP Timfon John, spokesperson for the command, assured that more details will be made public as inquiries continue.
