An explosion and massive fire broke out late Thursday night at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery near Los Angeles, sending flames and smoke billowing into the night sky.
According to a Reuters report, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. (local time) and was quickly contained by emergency crews. The blaze was restricted to one section of the refinery, preventing it from spreading to other areas.
Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of injuries, and Chevron announced that all personnel had been safely accounted for. Nearby residents were temporarily advised to remain indoors as a precautionary measure while air quality monitoring was conducted.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but investigations are ongoing. Officials are also assessing whether the fire could have any impact on regional fuel supply and pricing.
Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, located close to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), is one of the largest in California, processing hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil daily.
Local, state, and federal agencies are collaborating with Chevron to ensure public safety and evaluate the extent of the damage.
