The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Bamidele Akingboye, was murdered, contrary to earlier reports that he died peacefully at home. The confirmation followed the outcome of a forensic autopsy conducted by medical experts.
According to the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) intensified investigations after a viral photo showing bruises on Akingboye’s head raised suspicion about the circumstances surrounding his death. Crime-scene experts later cordoned off his residence in Victoria Garden City, Lagos, where they gathered physical and biological evidence.
Police have arrested several suspects linked to the case. Nine people were initially detained, including five members of Akingboye’s family and four domestic staff. After the autopsy confirmed homicide, seven family members were again taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation. The police say they are awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions before deciding on possible charges.
Fresh concerns also emerged after reports indicated that more than ₦200 million was withdrawn from the late politician’s bank accounts shortly after his death. Investigators have reportedly traced a significant portion of the funds to multiple bank accounts, prompting suspicions that financial motives may be connected to the crime.
Akingboye’s eldest son, Samuel, has demanded full transparency from the police. He is calling for the release of the autopsy results, CCTV footage from the residence, and details of the police investigation. He also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to take over the case, alleging possible interference and repeated reassignment of investigators.
Civil society organisations and human rights groups have joined the family in demanding a thorough inquiry to ensure justice is served. The case has drawn widespread attention due to Akingboye’s political profile and the sensitive nature of the allegations.
Akingboye, aged 60, was the SDP governorship candidate in the 2024 Ondo election and a respected businessman. His death has become one of the most closely watched investigations in recent months as Nigerians await the next steps from law enforcement.
