The immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), has officially bowed out of the Nigerian Armed Forces after an illustrious career spanning 39 years and four months.
At a colourful pulling-out parade held in Abuja on Friday, General Musa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve his country, declaring that he was leaving the military with a clear conscience.
“As I hang my uniform today, I do so with a clear conscience, knowing I gave my all,” he said in his emotional farewell speech.
“The sound of the bugle may change for me, but the soldier’s heart beats on forever.”
The retired CDS, who was appointed on June 19, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, thanked the Commander-in-Chief for the confidence reposed in him throughout his tenure. He also congratulated his successor, General Olufemi Oluyede, urging officers to extend the same loyalty and professionalism to the new leadership.
General Musa emphasized the importance of synergy among security agencies, noting that no single institution could win the war against insecurity alone. He also paid special tribute to his family, describing them as “unsung heroes” who stood by him through the challenges of military service.
The pulling-out ceremony, attended by top military officers, government officials, and well-wishers, marked the end of nearly four decades of dedicated service to Nigeria.
General Musa’s exit symbolizes both continuity and renewal within the Nigerian Armed Forces, as he passes the baton to a new generation of military leaders tasked with safeguarding the nation’s unity and stability.
