In a high-impact royal endorsement of peacebuilding, the Emir of Damaturu, Shehu Hashimi II Ibn Umar Al-Amin El-Kanemi, has bestowed prestigious traditional titles on frontline security leaders whose efforts have helped stabilise Yobe State—with Damaturu Emirate firmly in focus.
The Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Governor, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), PhD, was installed as Zannah Nziliwoma of the Damaturu Emirate Council, while the State Commander of the Hunters’ Group, Idrissa Buba, received the title of Zannah Girdima—a clear signal that courage, collaboration and community vigilance matter.
Declaring the appointments, the Royal Father said they were earned through “unwavering commitment, sacrifice and results,” noting that the honourees’ hands-on support for security operations has translated into the calm now enjoyed across communities.
“Our people sleep better today because of the dedication of those who stand guard,” the Emir said.Applause rippled through the hall as the Sardaunan Damaturu, Alhaji Mohammed Arabi, praised the Emir’s foresight, calling the honours “well-deserved and morale-boosting.”
He also appealed to the state government to rehabilitate the Emir’s Palace and the central mosque, describing both as priceless symbols of Damaturu’s history and faith.
From the security front, Brigadier General U. Ahmad, Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade, said the recognition would energise troops and community defenders alike, stressing that lasting peace depends on tight synergy between security agencies, traditional institutions and local hunters.
Speaking for the awardees, Brig. Gen. U. Ahmad thanked the Emir for the confidence reposed in them and pledged renewed commitment to protecting lives and property across the emirate.
The ceremony—attended by traditional title holders, security chiefs and residents—was widely hailed as a decisive step toward strengthening unity, confidence and durable peace in Damaturu.
