A Servant-Leader Guided by Faith: Zulum’s Frontline Sacrifice and the Islamic Spirit of Leadership.
And spend in the Way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Qur’an 2:195)
As the trials of insurgency continue to test the resilience of Borno State, one man remains unwavering in the face of danger Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. Guided by faith, sacrifice, and the Islamic principle of servant-leadership, he continues to lead not from behind a desk, but from the frontlines.
At a time when many in positions of authority may seek safety behind the walls of government houses, Zulum has chosen the path of selfless presence. He is not only seen in boardrooms, but also among displaced families, the poor, and at the battle-scarred Frontline where bullets and bombs still echo. His days and nights with soldiers, aid workers, and vulnerable citizens are not acts of political performance they are acts of ibadah (worship) through service to humanity.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The leader of the people is their servant.” In every muddy IDP camp and burned village he visits, Governor Zulum lives out this prophetic teaching. His leadership is defined not by command, but by compassion. He does not stand above his people but walks beside them through the ruins, distributing aid with his own hands, listening, learning, and acting.
For many, he is a beacon of hope. For the Islamic community, his leadership reflects the Qur’anic principle of Amr bil Ma’ruf wa Nahi ‘anil Munkar enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. He confronts injustice, uplifts the oppressed, and does so with tawakkul (trust in Allah) and unwavering resolve.
It is our duty, as believers and as a people of conscience, to support such leadership. The Qur’an reminds us: “Help one another in righteousness and piety…” (Qur’an 5:2). Supporting Governor Zulum is more than political; it is a spiritual obligation. For every drop of sweat he sheds in the pursuit of peace, may Allah multiply his reward. For every sleepless night he endures for the sake of Borno, may he be counted among the sabirun (those who patiently persevere).
Let us raise our hands in dua, praying for his continued strength, wisdom, and divine guidance. May his leadership serve as a model for others across Nigeria and the Muslim world of what it means to govern with heart, faith, and fearless dedication.
Governor Zulum has shown us the true image of a leader in the likeness of Umar ibn al-Khattab firm, just, humble, and unwavering in the defense of his people. May Allah continue to strengthen him and make his service a source of barakah for Borno State and all of Nigeria.
