Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to enhance electricity supply across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa.
The KEDCO Utility 2.0 Project will see 31 of Nigeria’s best renewable and off-grid companies develop 41 prioritized sites, aimed at improving energy security and aligning with the Federal Government’s energy transition plan.
KEDCO’s innovative approach includes interconnected mini-grids and embedded generation projects, targeting industrial areas like Tokarawa and new urban developments such as Kwankwasiyya City.
Each project will feature network infrastructure upgrades, modeled after the successful $2 million Zawaciki Solar Power Plant developed by Future Energies Africa.
Key sites for development include Tokarawa Industrial Area in Kano, Barhim Estate in Katsina, and Gumel in Jigawa.
Esteemed companies like Elektron Energy, PowerGen, and DayStar Power have committed to the project, with an estimated 60MW of solar power slated for construction.
KEDCO’s Chief Strategy Officer, Engr. Hussaini Sadiq, emphasized the potential for significant investment and partnerships, envisioning a revival of agro-industrial and commercial hubs.
KEDCO Chairman Engr. Adamu Ibrahim Gumel highlighted the long-term goal of resolving energy deficiencies, with plans already in motion for phase 2 of the Utility 2.0 initiative.
This ambitious project not only aims to improve electricity supply but also seeks to drive socio-economic empowerment and re-industrialization in the region, making KEDCO a pioneer in Africa’s green energy transition.
