Abuja was jolted on Tuesday as Nigerian senators accused the leadership of the National Assembly of pushing through an Electoral Reform Bill that was never approved by the Senate, igniting fresh outrage over the integrity of the lawmaking process.
Speaking at an emergency press conference, the lawmakers said the version eventually declared as “passed” bore little resemblance to what senators debated and endorsed on the floor. They described the development as a brazen betrayal, saying they were “shocked—just like millions of Nigerians.”
The senators warned that the controversy is déjà vu, recalling the earlier Tax Reform Bill which, despite loud objections, was allegedly altered and hurried into law.
“We warned that allowing such manipulation would have grave consequences,” one senator said. “Today, those consequences are staring the nation in the face.”
The lawmakers did not mince words, alleging that under the administration of , the rule of law is being dangerously undermined, with legislative procedures reduced to what they called a “rubber-stamp exercise.”
They demanded an urgent probe into the handling of the Electoral Reform Bill, insisting that transparency, accountability, and respect for due process must be restored.
As the controversy deepens, Nigerians are left grappling with a disturbing question: if laws can be rewritten after approval, is democracy itself under threat?
