Elderly 96-Year-Old Woman Dies After Falling Into Toilet Pit in Kano

A 96-year-old woman identified as Habiba Ado has died after accidentally falling into a toilet pit at Sarai village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.

Confirming the incident on Friday, the spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said the service received an emergency call around 4:10 p.m. on Thursday from one Usman Adamu, reporting that an elderly woman had been discovered inside a toilet pit.

He explained that fire service personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of Habiba Ado submerged in the soakaway. The body was recovered and later confirmed dead.

According to Abdullahi, the family members of the deceased told officials that the woman had been suffering from a memory-related illness and had been missing for four days before the tragic discovery.

He added that the remains of the woman were handed over to her relatives for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Meanwhile, residents of Sarai community have expressed shock over the incident and called on authorities to ensure safer sanitation structures in residential areas, especially where elderly people live.

The Kano State Fire Service has once again urged members of the public to always ensure that open pits and soakaways are properly covered to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
