House of Representatives member, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, has called for an immediate increase in the basic salary and welfare packages of Nigeria’s police officers and soldiers, insisting that improved recruitment must go hand in hand with better compensation.
Speaking on the nation’s security challenges, the lawmaker stressed that frontline security personnel are overstretched and underpaid, warning that effective reforms cannot succeed without prioritising their wellbeing.
“In addition to recruitment, there is a need for us to immediately increase the basic salary and welfare of police officers and soldiers, and we must find the money to do that,” El-Rufai declared, urging the Federal Government to make the issue a national priority.
He argued that boosting morale through better pay would strengthen discipline, enhance efficiency, and help retain skilled security personnel who continue to bear the burden of fighting crime and terrorism across the country.
El-Rufai’s strong call adds renewed momentum to ongoing debates over police reform, military support, and the need to modernise Nigeria’s security architecture for greater stability and safety.
