Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, has announced his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to pursue “progressive values” on a new platform.
El-Rufai made the declaration on his verified X account, stating, “At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish. I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).”
His defection marks a significant shake-up in the political landscape, sparking speculation about his future ambitions and the growing influence of the SDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
Analysts believe El-Rufai’s move could realign political forces, especially in northern Nigeria, where he remains a formidable figure. Will his defection trigger a wave of APC exits, or is this a solo act of political reinvention? The coming days will tell.
