The Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria PFAN has sounded the alarm over a sharp decline in egg sales nationwide, warning of an impending crisis that could cripple the poultry industry and threaten food security.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, PFAN officials revealed that egg consumption has plummeted dramatically, leaving millions of crates unsold and poultry farmers on the brink of devastating losses. The association attributes the slump to declining purchasing power, rising cost of poultry feed, and a lack of government intervention in promoting egg consumption.
“This is a national emergency,” a PFAN spokesperson declared. “If this trend continues, many farms will shut down, jobs will be lost, and protein deficiency will rise across vulnerable communities.”
The association is appealing to the Federal Government and state authorities to immediately launch an ‘Eat More Eggs’ campaign, integrate eggs into school feeding programs, and provide stimulus packages for struggling poultry farmers.
With thousands of farmers already dumping eggs due to spoilage, stakeholders warn that without swift action, the egg market collapse could trigger a domino effect across Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
