— Calls for Global Support as Violence Escalates Across the Region
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has sounded the alarm over the growing wave of terrorist attacks ravaging parts of the subregion, urging the United Nations and international partners to intensify support for countries like Nigeria battling extremist violence.
In a strongly worded communiqué, ECOWAS denounced the recent surge in killings by armed groups that, it said, “indiscriminately target civilians regardless of religion, gender, ethnicity, or age.”
The regional bloc firmly dismissed what it described as “false and dangerous claims” alleging that the attacks amount to a genocide against any specific religious community. Such claims, ECOWAS warned, risk fueling further division and undermining fragile peace efforts.
“Terrorist-related violence does not discriminate,” the statement noted, citing years of independent assessments confirming that extremist groups strike without regard for faith or ethnicity.
Calling for unity in the face of rising insecurity, ECOWAS appealed to the international community to stand in solidarity with affected nations in their joint struggle against terrorism across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin.
The call comes amid a worrying escalation of violence in parts of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and northern Nigeria, where various insurgent factions continue to unleash deadly attacks on communities and security forces alike.
