In a rare and dramatic show of compassion, the Department of State Services (DSS) has released a young man from Yobe State after clearing him of any wrongdoing and went further to hand him ₦2 million to rebuild his life.
The beneficiary, Mr. Ya’u Mohammed from Gashua town in Bade Local Government Area, was freed after investigations reportedly confirmed that he had no connection to the allegations that led to his detention.
The gesture, approved under the leadership of DSS Director General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, has drawn widespread commendation, with many describing it as an uncommon example of justice blended with humanity.
The Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Governor, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), disclosed the development during a visit to the DSS Yobe State Command Headquarters in Damaturu, where the young man was formally handed over before reuniting with his family.
General Abdulsalam said his visit was to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the detention and eventual release of the youth, adding that detailed reviews by the Service established that the young man was innocent of the allegations against him.
The retired General described the development as unprecedented in his long years of public service, noting that he had never witnessed a situation where a cleared suspect was not only released but also financially empowered to reintegrate into society.
According to him, the intervention reflects the DSS leadership’s commitment to justice, compassion, rehabilitation, and respect for human dignity.
He also urged other security agencies across the country to continue upholding the rule of law and fundamental human rights in order to strengthen public confidence and cooperation.
Speaking shortly after regaining freedom, Mr. Ya’u Mohammed expressed gratitude to Almighty God and appreciated the DSS leadership for what he described as kindness and support at a difficult moment in his life.
He promised to use the ₦2 million support fund wisely to establish a sustainable means of livelihood and cater for his family.
An emotional reunion followed as his father, Alhaji Muhammadu, thanked the DSS for what he called a compassionate and commendable intervention that restored hope to the family.
