There’s a fresh breeze of economic relief across Nigeria as the Dangote Refinery slashed diesel prices to ₦940 per litre, sparking celebration among transporters, manufacturers, and small business owners.
The announcement, made Tuesday, marks a significant drop from the previous ₦1,200+ market rate and signals growing momentum in local refining efforts. Stakeholders say the move could cool inflation and bring down food prices, haulage costs, and power generation expenses for diesel-dependent businesses.
Transporters, who’ve long groaned under rising diesel costs, say the price drop will reduce fares and delivery rates. Small business owners relying on diesel generators amidst Nigeria’s persistent power woes also see this as a lifeline.
“This is the kind of local impact we’ve been waiting for,” said Musa Lawal, a logistics manager in Kano. “The refinery isn’t just a mega project—it’s starting to touch everyday lives.”
The price cut is part of the Dangote Group’s broader mission to make energy affordable and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports. Analysts suggest if the trend continues, diesel prices could fall even further—especially as the refinery ramps up production and stabilizes supply chains.
For now, the message is clear: Dangote is driving change, and Nigerians are feeling it at the pump.
