The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted reports suggesting a coup attempt against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the claim as a dangerous fabrication intended to spread fear and mistrust among Nigerians.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the military clarified that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary parade was not connected to any political or security plot, but rather to allow President Tinubu attend an important bilateral engagement abroad and enable troops to focus on critical national security operations.
“The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a false and misleading report insinuating that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup,” the statement read. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to categorically state that the claims are entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among the populace.”
General Gusau further explained that the recent announcement regarding the arrest of sixteen officers had been misrepresented by mischief makers, stressing that the internal probe was a routine disciplinary process aimed at upholding professionalism within the ranks.
He assured Nigerians that the military remains loyal to the Constitution and firmly committed to democracy under the leadership of President Tinubu.
“The DHQ calls on all peace-loving citizens to continue supporting security agencies. Democracy is forever,” Gusau stated, urging the public to disregard what he termed “falsehoods propagated by enemies of the nation.”
