The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retired), made an official visit to Maiduguri today to bolster morale and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to combating insurgency in the Northeast.
The visit comes amid ongoing threats from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), with recent waves of attacks causing concern among residents and authorities alike.
Upon arrival, the Minister was received by Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, alongside the General Officer Commanding and Sector One Commander, Ugochukwu Unachukwu, as well as senior military officials. This marks his first official visit to Borno State since assuming office as Nigeria’s Defence Minister, following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Before this role, Musa served as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff.
During his visit, the Minister paid a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno at his palace, where he expressed condolences over recent attacks and reaffirmed the federal government’s support to the state and its people.
“I am here on behalf of President Bola Tinubu to symbolize solidarity and to offer condolences to the Shehu, the government, and the resilient people of Borno State,” Musa stated.
In a separate address to troops at Maimalari Military Barracks, the Defence Minister commended their sacrifices and urged them to persevere.
“You are making tremendous sacrifices—many have lost their lives, and many have been injured. While we cannot fully compensate you, be assured that your dedication has not gone unnoticed. The President and all Nigerians appreciate your resilience. Stay disciplined, focused, and committed to finishing the fight against terrorism and banditry. Our enemies do not wish us well, and we must remain unwavering.”
The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Kadafur, representing Governor Zulum, responded that the visit demonstrated the federal government’s renewed commitment to overhauling security strategies in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast.
Addressing journalists afterward, the Minister emphasized Nigeria’s unwavering resolve
“Despite the numerous challenges, our armed forces have achieved remarkable successes through immense sacrifice. While setbacks are inevitable, they do not define our overall progress. Our troops are performing exceptionally well, and their resilience should make every Nigerian proud. We remain committed to telling the true story of their bravery and dedication. Victory may be temporary, but our ultimate goal is enduring success. Nigeria is greater than any challenge, and with continued focus, modern equipment, and international cooperation, we will secure our future. Our resolve remains firm, and Nigeria’s future is bright.”
Following the engagements, the defence minister Musa paid tribute to fallen heroes at the Maimalari Cemetery, commissioned housing units for military officers at Maimalari Barracks before departing for Abuja.
