ABUJA — Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has summoned an emergency meeting of the nation’s top military commanders following a troubling surge in terrorist attacks on military formations, particularly in the North-East.
The high-level security meeting, convened at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, brought together key leaders of the armed forces and intelligence community to urgently review the country’s counter-insurgency strategy.
Among those in attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Abubakar; and Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla. Representatives of the National Intelligence Agency were also present at the strategic session.
The emergency summons follows a series of deadly attacks by terrorists targeting military bases in Borno State, the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency.
Security reports indicate that at least three commanding officers of Lieutenant-Colonel rank were killed during recent assaults on military formations, alongside scores of soldiers who fell in the line of duty while repelling the attackers.
The wave of violence has also left hundreds of civilians abducted in affected communities, raising fresh concerns about the evolving tactics of insurgent groups operating in the region.
Sources familiar with the meeting said the Defence Minister expressed deep concern over the growing audacity of terrorist fighters and stressed the need for immediate adjustments to operational strategies.
Badaru reportedly urged the service chiefs to intensify coordination across the armed forces and intelligence agencies, while exploring innovative approaches to neutralise insurgent threats and protect military installations.
Despite the recent setbacks, the minister noted that Nigerian troops have continued to inflict heavy casualties on terrorist groups during ongoing operations across the theatre of conflict.
He emphasized that the sacrifices made by troops on the frontlines would not be in vain, assuring that the federal government remains committed to strengthening the operational capacity of the military.
Analysts say the attacks on military formations represent a tactical shift by insurgent groups seeking to undermine troop morale and capture weapons from bases. However, security officials insist that the armed forces retain operational superiority and are steadily degrading terrorist capabilities.
The emergency meeting also reviewed intelligence assessments and battlefield developments across the North-East, where troops have been engaged in sustained operations against insurgent factions for over a decade.
