A police officer has been killed after more than 30 armed assailants attacked Guto, a community in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja, in the early hours of Thursday.
Residents reported that the attackers invaded the village in large numbers, attempting to abduct a local resident and members of his family. Police operatives from the area swiftly responded, engaging the assailants in a fierce gun duel.
During the exchange of fire, two of the attackers were killed, while the rest fled into surrounding bushes and rocky terrain. One police officer sustained serious injuries after being hit by gunfire. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed dead.
Authorities say additional security personnel have been deployed to the community to restore calm. An investigation has also been launched to track down and apprehend the fleeing attackers.
The incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in communities along the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory.
