Dangote Slashes Cooking Gas Price to ₦760/kg — Exposes Marketers Over Price Fixing, Profiteering

Nigerians have expressed outrage as cooking gas continues to sell for over ₦1,000 per kilogram in most parts of the country, despite Dangote Refinery’s recent decision to slash its price to ₦760/kg.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, in a bid to make liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) more affordable and curb inflationary pressures on households, announced a reduction in its ex-depot price to ₦760 per kilogram. However, consumers say the move has yet to reflect in the retail market, accusing gas marketers of price manipulation and profiteering.

Reports from major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt indicate that retail prices remain between ₦1,000 and ₦1,200 per kilogram — far above the new refinery rate. Many households and small businesses, already struggling with high living costs, are calling on the federal government to intervene and ensure compliance.

Energy analysts say the wide gap between refinery and retail prices highlights deep-seated challenges in the downstream gas distribution network, including transportation costs, middlemen exploitation, and lack of regulatory oversight.

Consumer rights advocates have urged the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to step in, arguing that the Dangote price cut should lead to an immediate reduction across the value chain.

Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery officials reiterated their commitment to supporting the federal government’s goal of affordable domestic energy, emphasizing that the price slash was aimed at easing economic hardship.

However, until enforcement measures are in place, consumers fear the benefits of the price cut may not reach end users.
