The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has condemned the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) for what it described as a “lawless and criminal directive” to its branches to halt the supply of petroleum products from the multi-billion-dollar facility.
The refinery, Africa’s largest and Nigeria’s most strategic industrial project, said the union’s order amounted to economic sabotage with grave implications for both the Nigerian state and ordinary citizens.
According to Dangote Group, the disruption, if carried out, would cut off the supply of critical products including aviation fuel, petrol, kerosene, diesel, and cooking gas—commodities relied upon by every Nigerian “whether high and mighty or lowly and ordinary.”
“In what circumstance would it be justified for PENGASSAN to introduce insufferable hardship into the living conditions of Nigerians? None that we can see,” the statement read.
The company further questioned whose interest the union was serving, insisting it was certainly not that of the Nigerian state or its people.
Dangote Refinery, which is recognized as the only facility of its kind in Africa, warned that such actions would not only tarnish Nigeria’s global image but also discourage foreign investors who view the refinery as a benchmark for industrial progress.
“An irreparable injury to the Dangote Refinery such as PENGASSAN has directed constitutes a national embarrassment to all of us,” the statement declared.
Beyond the economic disruption, the refinery noted that its significant contributions to government revenue—both federal and state—would be jeopardized if the directive is enforced.
As tensions between the refinery and the union escalate, concerns are mounting over potential fuel shortages and the ripple effects on Nigeria’s fragile economy.
