Residents of Damaturu have poured encomiums on Mai Mala Buni, CON, and the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), Ph.D., following the successful relocation of street traders to the Ibrahim Geidam Ultra Modern Market, describing the move as a bold stride toward order, security and urban renewal in the state capital.

The commendation followed the impressive level of compliance recorded as traders vacated roadsides and informal spots to resume business within the purpose-built market, signalling a return to organised commerce and improved city management.

Yobe State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technologies, Abdulmumin Kolo Gulani, said residents were delighted with the exercise, noting that the orderly relocation has eased traffic congestion, enhanced public safety and restored the aesthetic appeal of the metropolis.

Confirming the development, the General Manager of the market, Bulama Larema, said the relocation has gained wide acceptance, with increased occupancy and smooth commercial activities now evident across the facility.

Speaking during an assessment visit, Larema described the outcome as a reflection of the positive response of traders and residents to the government’s directive aimed at strengthening security, enforcing urban order and promoting safe business practices across Yobe State.

He particularly applauded Brigadier General Abdulsalam for his effective leadership as Chairman of the Joint Task Force Committee on the Relocation of Street Traders, citing the committee’s professionalism, coordination and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“The level of compliance we are witnessing is highly commendable. Traders are relocating willingly, and the market is fast emerging as a central hub for organised, secure and sustainable commercial activities,” Larema said.

The General Manager also praised Governor Buni for his foresight and investment in the construction of the ultra-modern market, describing it as a landmark project that offers traders a safe, modern and conducive environment, while eliminating the risks associated with roadside trading.

He added that the presence of the Joint Task Force, backed by a Mobile and Revenue Court, has strengthened enforcement, with defaulters being addressed in line with existing laws.

Larema assured that market management would sustain collaboration with relevant authorities to maintain cleanliness, orderliness and security, while urging the few remaining traders yet to relocate to comply fully.

The successful relocation, residents agree, marks a significant milestone in Damaturu’s march toward a well-organised, secure and economically vibrant capital—one that mirrors the urban renewal vision of the Yobe State Government.
