Katsina—In a decisive move to strengthen discipline and professionalism within its ranks, the Nigeria Customs Service has announced plans to conduct comprehensive medical examinations and drug tests for its officers nationwide.
The initiative was disclosed on Tuesday by the Assistant Comptroller-General and Zonal Coordinator, Zone “B”, Mrs. N. P. Umoh, during a working visit to the Nigeria Customs Service Katsina Command.
According to Umoh, the proposed screening is aimed at sharpening officers’ mental alertness, encouraging positive thinking, and promoting professionalism—particularly among personnel attached to anti-smuggling operations, where pressure and risk are highest.
She explained that her visit was also to formally encourage the new Area Comptroller, Muhammad Sa’id, while consolidating on the achievements recorded by his predecessor.
“The drug and medical tests are part of efforts to reposition our officers to think positively, act professionally, and command respect, especially those on the frontline of anti-smuggling duties,” Umoh said.
The ACG charged the Katsina Command and other formations under Zone “B” to embrace renewed commitment and determination, stressing the need to always do what is right in the discharge of their duties.
She singled out the Nigeria Customs Service Kano Command for special praise after it clinched multiple merit awards, including best performance in revenue generation, customs procedures and operations, as well as outstanding public relations activities.
Umoh also commended officers in Katsina for recording notable professional achievements despite daunting challenges such as insecurity, porous borders, and persistent smuggling activities.
While urging officers to remain firm, she advised them to prioritise safety, apply wisdom in policy enforcement, and rely strictly on credible intelligence in carrying out operations.
As Customs tightens internal checks, the message from Katsina was clear: discipline, integrity, and smart enforcement are now central to the Service’s evolving mandate.
