Customs Officer Arrested Over Deadly Shooting of Alleged Policeman in Delta

Katsina state government

A Nigeria Customs Service officer, Hamza Salisu, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command following a fatal shooting incident involving a man suspected to be a police officer along the East-West Road in Patani.

The incident occurred late on May 2, around 11:58 p.m., according to reports obtained by Zagazola Makama. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ibrahim Surajo, who is attached to PMF 51 Oghara and was stationed at a nearby stop-and-search checkpoint, reported hearing gunfire moments before a Toyota RAV4 suddenly veered off the road and crashed into a ditch near a Customs checkpoint.

Upon rushing to the scene, ASP Surajo discovered that the driver—believed to be a fellow officer based on his clothing—had been shot and was already deceased.

Authorities are yet to confirm the victim’s identity and the exact model of the vehicle involved. The body has been deposited at the Patani General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Hamza Salisu, the Customs officer alleged to have fired the fatal shot, has been detained as investigations are underway. Police have not yet established the motive for the shooting but say security personnel in the area remain on high alert as the probe continues.
