The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a fresh breakthrough in its ongoing war against cultism and illegal arms, arresting a suspected member of the dreaded Black Axe confraternity and recovering a firearm in Nsit Atai Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the Command, vigilant operatives on routine patrol at about 3:00 p.m. on February 24, 2026, intercepted a motorcycle carrying two passengers within Nsit Atai. However, upon being ordered to stop for a search, one of the passengers—who had a black handbag strapped around his neck—suddenly jumped off the motorcycle and attempted to flee.
In a swift tactical response, officers pursued and apprehended the fleeing suspect. A search conducted at the point of arrest led to the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol, several wraps of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, a lighter, and a small mobile phone.
Preliminary interrogation identified the suspect as Abasi-Ama Bassey, a male resident of Ikot Nkwo Village in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA of Akwa Ibom State. He reportedly confessed to being a member of the notorious Black Axe secret cult group.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance policy against cultism, unlawful possession of firearms, and related violent crimes. He warned criminal elements across the state to desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.
The Command disclosed that discreet investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider criminal network and apprehend other members of the syndicate, with a pledge to ensure diligent prosecution in line with extant laws.
Residents were urged to continue supporting the Police with credible and timely information as authorities intensify efforts to rid the state of criminal activities.
