Tensions are boiling over within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar throws his weight behind efforts to remove the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
The move has split the party, pitting governors against each other in a high-stakes power struggle.
Seven PDP governors, led by Bauchi’s Bala Mohammed, are pushing for Damagum’s exit, while a rival group of four, spearheaded by Oyo State’s Seyi Makinde, is standing firm in his defense.
Adding fuel to the fire, the pro-Damagum faction is closely aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, a former Atiku ally turned rival.
The fallout from Damagum’s controversial decision to hand control of the Rivers State PDP structure to Wike, sidelining the current governor Siminalayi Fubara, has deepened the divide.
Atiku is reportedly in talks with key PDP leaders, urging them to support the chairman’s ousting to protect the party’s future.
With internal divisions growing and Damagum’s leadership hanging in the balance, the PDP faces an escalating crisis that could shake the party’s foundations ahead of future elections.
