The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, on Thursday presented cheques totaling ₦22,094,914.80 to the families and next of kin of 63 deceased police officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The brief but emotional ceremony, held at the State Police Headquarters, Uyo, was a moment of reflection and gratitude for the sacrifices of the fallen heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty.
While presenting the cheques, CP Azare extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, remains steadfast in prioritizing the welfare of police officers—both serving and retired—as well as the dependents of those who died in active service.
He emphasized that the gesture was part of ongoing efforts to honor the sacrifices of gallant officers who paid the ultimate price in protecting lives and property. “The Force will continue to stand by the families of our fallen heroes and ensure their wellbeing is not neglected,” CP Azare said.
The Police Commissioner further urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely by investing in legitimate ventures and improving the living standards of their households.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, some beneficiaries expressed profound appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for the timely intervention, describing the gesture as a major relief amid tough economic times. They pledged to make judicious use of the funds in memory of their loved ones.
The event was witnessed by senior police officers, representatives of the deceased families, and members of the press.
