A Federal High Court in Kano has dealt a major blow to embattled Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, rejecting his attempt to halt ongoing impeachment proceedings against him.
Delivering a ruling on Wednesday, Justice S. M. Shaibu declined Gwarzo’s request for an interim injunction that sought to restrain the Kano State House of Assembly from moving forward with the process.
The application, filed by his counsel, Barrister Umar Danbaito, had urged the court to freeze all impeachment actions pending the determination of the substantive suit. However, the court held that the deputy governor failed to meet the legal threshold required to grant such urgent relief.
Despite the setback, the judge ordered that all respondents be properly served with court processes and adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026, for further proceedings.
The legal battle follows a dramatic impeachment notice issued by the Assembly, accusing Gwarzo of financial impropriety and abuse of office. Lawmakers had given him a two-week window to respond to the allegations.
The notice, reportedly backed by 40 legislators across party lines—including members of the All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria People’s Party—was moved by Majority Leader Lawan Husaini of Dala constituency.
Citing Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Assembly insisted the move followed due process for the possible removal of a deputy governor.
With the court refusing to intervene at this stage, political tension is expected to heighten in Kano as the impeachment process gathers momentum.
