The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reassured Nigerian Army’s commitment to collaborate with all stakeholders in a joint and multi-agency environment to secure the nation.
Oluyede made the remark during the Interdenominational Church Service to mark the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2025, on Sunday in Sokoto.
Represented by General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of Nigerian Army Sokoto, Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, Oluyede assured that Army would continue work in partnership and remained united for peace, stability and prosperity of the country.
He reiterated army’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity, and upholding the rights of all citizens.
He affirmed that the Nigerian Army would continue to root out terrorism and ensure national security through effective counter-terrorism strategies.
“The Nigerian Army at 162 remains a cornerstone of our national defense. Our troops continue to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and sacrifice in counterterrorism, peacekeeping, and civil support operations,” he stated.
The COAS reflected on the Army’s transformation agenda, highlighting that the ongoing implementation of the “Soldier First” philosophy, prioritizes troop welfare.
“In Sokoto, for example, the main medical facility is being renovated while surgeries are ongoing across temporary sites.
” We’ve also improved water supply, purchased a power generator for the mini waterworks, and renovated schools within the barracks along with other notable achievements and strengthened logistics.” he revealed.
According to him, the Nigerian Army commemorates its 162nd anniversary with Jumuat prayer and interdenominational church service, marking this year’s NADCEL.
” The ceremony is simultaneously across formations nationwide, was both symbolic and spiritual, drawing high-ranking officers, families, and members of the public together in thanksgiving and reflection.
” The theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive,” reflects the Army’s focus on enhancing its operational capabilities and aligning with contemporary security demands.
The GOC, who shares his birthday with the Nigerian Army anniversary, described the celebration as personal and patriotic, thanking sister security agencies and civil society groups for their continued support.
According to him, it is also a time to remember and honour the brave heroes who fell in the line of duty as well as their dear families that are subjected to bearing the absence, loss and scars of service.
“While we feel the pain of our loss, we take solace in God’s will. We honor those who paid the supreme price and pray for their families,” he added.
He acknowledged governors in security-challenged states like Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi for their cooperation.
In his sermon during the service, Lt. Col. Rev. Yakubu David, the Deputy Director Chaplain Services called for divine intervention in Nigeria’s affairs.
David called for increased unity, peace, and faith in God’s plan stressing that the Nigerian Army is the backbone of our national defence, working tirelessly to protect citizens.
He said Nigerian Army played important roles in defending national territorial integrity and supporting the civil authority to maintain law and order.
