A prominent Islamic cleric in Kebbi State has called on governments at all levels to urgently adopt stronger and more strategic measures to tackle Nigeria’s lingering security crisis.
Delivering his Friday sermon in Birnin Kebbi, the Chief Imam of Jayyas Filing Station Jumu’at Mosque, Sheikh Ibrahim Kaya, declared that the persistent killings and attacks across parts of the country must not be allowed to continue unchecked.
The cleric lamented what he described as the alarming rate of violence in the North-East and North-West, where banditry, insurgency and other criminal activities have claimed countless lives and displaced communities.
Sheikh Kaya stressed that those entrusted with leadership would be held accountable for their actions, both morally and spiritually.“Those in positions of authority must govern with justice and fairness. Every leader will be questioned on how they discharged their responsibilities,” he warned, urging public office holders to rise above politics and act decisively to protect lives and property.
The Imam also used the pulpit to address concerns over electricity supply, calling on power sector officials to fear God in the discharge of their duties. He condemned the alleged practice of issuing what he termed “unjust bills” to consumers despite erratic supply.
He criticized the collection of multiple charges — including connection and reconnection fees — while many communities continue to grapple with prolonged outages. He further alleged preferential power allocation to select areas and personalities, cautioning that accountability ultimately rests with God.
Sheikh Kaya concluded by urging the Muslim Ummah to intensify prayers for lasting peace and stability in Kebbi, the wider northern region and Nigeria as a whole.
The sermon drew a large congregation, with worshippers nodding in agreement as the cleric called for justice, fairness and renewed commitment to ending insecurity in the nation.
