The Republic of Chad is urging the international community to bolster support for counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel following a recent Boko Haram attack that killed around 40 Chadian soldiers.
According to a government statement on Tuesday, the surprise assault by Boko Haram militants targeted a military garrison in the volatile Lake Chad region, leaving approximately 20 other soldiers wounded. Government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah emphasized Chad’s call for greater international assistance, stating that collective action is essential to restore stability across the region.
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has since ordered an operation to pursue the assailants, with security
forces actively tracking those responsible.
Meanwhile, the French embassy in Chad expressed solidarity with the nation, reaffirming France’s support in the ongoing fight against terrorism and extending condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers.
Chad, a key French ally in the Sahel, is surrounded by nations facing similar security challenges, including the presence of Russian paramilitary forces in neighboring countries like Sudan and Libya. The Lake Chad area, marked by its swamps and islets, has long served as a hiding ground for Boko Haram and ISWAP militants who routinely launch attacks on both military and civilian targets in the region.
