The Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, has reacted to a viral video involving a soldier and a federal minister, describing the soldier’s calm reaction as a demonstration of discipline, emotional intelligence, and true military professionalism.
General Oluyede noted that “every soldier has an element of madness,” explaining that while a right-thinking man retreats from danger, a soldier charges toward it. According to him, this courage and mental toughness are the hallmarks of the military spirit, adding that the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) does not produce docile officers.
He commended the soldier for remaining calm, firm, and respectful despite being verbally provoked, saying the act reflected the values of leadership and composure instilled at the NDA. “His response demonstrates admirable composure, discipline, and professionalism,” the CDS remarked.
However, General Oluyede described the minister’s language toward the officer as “unfortunate and inappropriate,” stressing that public officials must model civility and restraint, especially when dealing with military personnel who serve and sacrifice for the nation.
The CDS concluded that the incident remains under his scrutiny and assured that due process will be followed. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to maintaining discipline, respect, and professionalism at all levels.
