‘Butcher of El-Fasher’: Sudanese RSF Commander Claims Responsibility for Over 2,000 Civilian Killings

Borno State Government

El-Fasher, North Darfur — A Sudanese paramilitary commander, Abu Lulu (real name Al-Fateh Abdullah Idris), has emerged as a chilling symbol of the ongoing violence in Sudan after reportedly executing over 2,000 civilians in El-Fasher. The killings, carried out after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the city last week, have drawn global condemnation.

Video footage circulating online shows Abu Lulu shooting civilians at point-blank range, earning him the grim nickname “Butcher of El-Fasher.” He openly admitted the mass killings in a TikTok live stream, stating, “I wanted to kill 2,000, but I’m sure the number exceeded 2,000, but I got confused about the calculation.”

Abu Lulu is a close associate of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) and a member of the Mahariya Rizeigat tribe. He joined the RSF in 2013, quickly rising through the ranks thanks to family connections and prior military training. His career includes service in RSF special forces, intelligence operations, and deployments in Yemen, as well as overseeing executions and hostage killings in Khartoum during Sudan’s civil conflict.

The RSF’s seizure of El-Fasher marks the latest chapter in a war that erupted in April 2023, pitting Hemedti’s forces against the Sudanese army. International observers have linked Abu Lulu and other RSF leaders to widespread atrocities, with his prior superior, Abdelrheem Dagalo, sanctioned for war crimes in September 2023.

The shocking scale of Abu Lulu’s admitted killings has intensified calls for accountability, as human rights groups warn that the Darfur region remains caught in a cycle of brutality with civilians bearing the brunt of paramilitary violence.
