Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, North West Zone, Sector 4, have intercepted a tanker loaded with smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Kano State, dealing a major blow to an illegal fuel diversion network.
Acting on intelligence, the patrol team apprehended the vehicle along a covert route near Kura Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday. According to Comptroller Aminu Abubakar, Sector Commander of the Joint Border Patrol Team, the tanker was transporting fuel meant for local distribution to an undisclosed border location.
“This is economic sabotage. We will not allow unscrupulous individuals to divert critical resources meant for the Nigerian people. Investigations are ongoing, and the culprits will be brought to justice,” Abubakar stated during a media briefing.
The NSCDC says initial findings suggest the tanker was operating with forged documents and may be part of a wider fuel smuggling syndicate. The contents of the truck, now impounded at a secured location, are estimated at over 40,000 liters.
With fuel scarcity still lingering in parts of the country and distribution under scrutiny, authorities are stepping up surveillance across major depots and transit points. The public has been urged to report suspicious movements of petroleum products.
This seizure marks a significant win in the fight against fuel smuggling, as the government intensifies efforts to stabilize fuel supply and protect national resources.
