Governor Mai-Mala Buni continues to expand his leadership influence beyond his home state, earning recognition both nationally and across the Lake Chad region through key strategic appointments that highlight his growing political stature.

In January 2025, Governor Buni was elected Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, a position widely regarded as one that demands exceptional wisdom, diplomacy and calm judgment. The forum brings together governors and regional leaders from areas surrounding the Lake Chad Basin to coordinate development, security cooperation and humanitarian efforts in a region long affected by insurgency, climate change and economic challenges.

His election to the position was seen by many political observers as a testament to his leadership qualities and his track record in managing complex governance issues. As chairman, Buni was entrusted with the responsibility of guiding regional development efforts across six states within the Lake Chad Basin corridor.

The assignment is no small task. The region continues to grapple with security concerns, cross-border insurgency threats and the urgent need for economic revitalisation. Coordinating policies among states and ensuring effective collaboration among governments requires a steady hand and strategic foresight.
Under Buni’s leadership, the forum is expected to strengthen cooperation among member states, promote sustainable development initiatives and enhance coordination with international partners working to stabilise the Lake Chad region.

Political analysts say the appointment underscores Buni’s growing reputation as a consensus builder capable of navigating complex regional issues.

His leadership trajectory continued to gather momentum in February 2025 when he was appointed Chairman of the **All Progressives Congress Constitution Amendment Committee.

The committee plays a critical role in reviewing and refining the party’s constitutional framework to ensure it reflects the evolving realities of Nigeria’s political landscape. As chairman, Buni was tasked with overseeing consultations, gathering input from stakeholders across the country and guiding discussions on reforms aimed at strengthening internal democracy within the ruling party.

Observers within the party say his experience as a former national chairman of the APC placed him in a strong position to lead such an important assignment, given his deep understanding of the party’s structures and operational dynamics.

Shortly after this appointment, Governor Buni was again called upon to take up another key responsibility as Chairman of the Committee on Co-option into the **APC National Executive Committee and APC National Working Committee.

The committee is responsible for managing the process through which new voices and experienced leaders are brought into the party’s highest decision-making bodies. This role places Buni at the centre of shaping the party’s leadership direction and ensuring that its governing structures remain inclusive and responsive.

Political watchers say these successive appointments reflect the high level of confidence that party leaders and regional stakeholders have in the Yobe governor’s ability to manage sensitive political responsibilities with fairness and maturity.
From leading his state through developmental reforms to playing a pivotal role in regional cooperation and national party leadership, Buni’s profile continues to grow within Nigeria’s political landscape.

For many supporters and observers alike, Governor Mai-Mala Buni remains not just a leader of Yobe State, but a symbol of steady leadership and strategic vision — truly, our governor and our pride.
